Movie: Captain Newman MD (1963)
Film Synopsis:
In 1944, Captain Josiah J. Newman is the doctor in charge of Ward 7, the neuropsychiatric ward, at an Army Air Corps hospital in Arizona . The hospital is under-resourced and Newman muddles through what he needs with the help of his inventive staff, especially CPL. Jake Leibowitz. The military generally only came to accept psychiatric disorders as legitimate and Newman generally had 6 weeks to cure them or send them to another facility. There are many patients on the ward and the newest include Colonel Norville Bliss who has separated himself from his past; Captain Paul Winston who is nearly catatonic after spending 13 months hiding in a cellar behind enemy lines; and 20-year-old Corporal. Jim Tompkins was very traumatized after his plane was shot down. Others came and went, including Italian prisoners of war, but Newman and the team all realized that their success meant the men would return to their units.
