Movie: He Who Must Die (1957)
Film Synopsis:
Greece, in the 1920s, was occupied by Turks. The country is in chaos with entire villages uprooted. The site of the film is a Greek village that stages passion games every year. The leading townspeople, under the auspices of the patriarch, chose who would play parts in the passion. A stuttering shepherd was chosen to play Jesus. The Town Butcher (who wanted to be Jesus) was cast as Judas. The town prostitute was cast as Mary Magdalene. The rest of the disciples were also selected. As the film unfolds, the passion play becomes a reality. A group of villagers, uprooted by war and impoverished, arrive at the village led by their priest. The wealthier townspeople of the city want nothing to do with these people and manipulate the massacre. In the context of the 1920s, each character plays their biblical role in actuality.
