Movie: Ivan the Terrible Part II The Boyars Plot (1958)
Film Synopsis:
This is the second part of a projected three-part epic biopic of Russian Tsar Ivan Grozny, undertaken by Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein at the behest of Josef Stalin. Production of the epic was halted before the third part could be filmed, due to the producers dissatisfaction with Eisensteins filmmaking technique of introducing experimentalism into the material, more evident in this part than in the first. As it was, this second part was banned from performance until after the deaths of Eisenstein and Stalin, and a change in attitude by subsequent heads of the Soviet government. In this section, as Ivans monstrous attempts to consolidate his power by establishing a private army, his political rivals, the Russian boyars, plot to assassinate him.
