Movie: When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960)
Film Synopsis:
Keiko, who everyone calls Mama, tells her story: She was a hostess in Ginza, 30, a widow. She describes a vicious cycle of life: acting cheerful around drunks, dressing and living well to convey confidence, needing money for these expenses and for her demanding mother and brother, and knowing she is getting older. She was already at the age when she had to choose: to seek marriage (difficult considering her tarnished job), to become a kept woman, or borrow money to buy her own bar. Each route has its dangers, including investors demanding repayment of their loans. Keiko has a quiet dignity that attracts men, but are they what they seem? Did he really have a choice?
