Film Synopsis:
The story takes place during the colonization of the Laurentian region of Quebec towards the end of the 19th century (around 1885-90), near Sainte-Adele. An unscrupulous man, Seraphin Poudrier, dominates a small community using his wealth. Mayor of the village, he would marry Donalda Laloge, after her father, unable to pay his debts, gave her to him in marriage. Donalda, a gentle and submissive woman promised the handsome Alexis Labranche, more precisely, she would live her life according to the wishes of this petty and insulting miser, but would never let her situation bring her down.
