Film Synopsis:
On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped from death when his canoe capsized driving onto shore behind a whale. Since then, Whangara chiefs, always eldest, always male, have been considered direct descendants of Paikea. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a New Zealand Patriarchal tribe, believes she is destined to become the new chief. But Koros grandfather was bound by tradition to choose a male leader.
