Movie: The Ugly American (1963)
Film Synopsis:
A bright and articulate scholar, Harrison MacWhite, survives a hostile Senate confirmation hearing at the hands of conservatives to become Ambassador to Sarkan, an Asian country Southeast where the Civil War threatens a tense peace. Despite his knowledge, once he was there, MacWhite saw only a dichotomy between the US and communism. He could not accept that anti-American sentiment might be a yearning for self-determination and nationalism. So, he takes a break from his friend Deong, a local opposition leader, ignores the foremans advice about slowing down the road construction, and tries to muscle in on the front.
